On the evening of April 12th, 1945, the Berlin Philharmonic gave a last concert in Berlin: TWILIGHT OF THE GODS "Götterdämmerung"  by Richard Wagner, which became the theme for the Battle for Berlin.

In 1945, the Germans were seeking an honorable peace with the British and the Americans, while at the same time, the Germans were using all remaining reserve military units to fight the Soviet Communists in the east.

The 1945 German defense of Berlin, contributed greatly to the NATO Western Cold War victory against Soviet Russian Communism in 1992, by creating time for large populations and technology to escape Communist rule.  

EVERY SOVIET TANK KILLED during 1945, contributed to the Western NATO Cold War 1992 victory.

• *NOTE: All 105 members of the Berlin Philharmonic, were given permission to leave Berlin directly following the final concert, on April 12, 1945.   ONLY one member accepted the offer.  The other 104 Berlin Philharmonic members chose to defend Berlin.

During the Battle for Berlin, the Germans were out numbered by more than ten to one, in weapons, resources, troops, and in everything, except courage.

In addition to the Volkssturm, German Army {Wehrmacht}, Armed German Air Force Infantry {Luftwaffe}, Armed German Navy Infantry {Kriegs Marine} and remaining Waffen SS units, volunteers from all over Europe came to Berlin to assist the Germans to fight the Soviet Communists during the Battle for Berlin. 

During the Battle for Berlin April-May, 1945, volunteers which assisted the Germans to defend Berlin came from:  Holland, France, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, and other parts of Europe, who mostly joined the Waffen SS.

Before, and throughout the Battle for Berlin, the German government warned all German civilians not to allow themselves to be captured by the Soviets. 

As a civil defense message to the public, the German government warned civilians who are captured by the Soviets would be often murdered by the Soviets, suffer criminal sadistic cruel perverted abuse by their Soviet captors, and face Soviet enslavement.

German civilians who were able to follow this sound advice, and avoid capture by the Soviets, were very thankful for this German government civil defense warning.
